Terence M. “Terry” Smith
Utica-Terence M. “Terry” Smith, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Oneida Healthcare’s Extended Care Facility. At the time of his passing his loving family was by his side.
He was born in Schenectady, on May 1, 1937, the son of the late T. Gilbert and Ethel Terry Smith. He was raised in Madison and was a graduate of Madison High School. Terry had been married to Norma Marceau, who predeceased him. He also had a 45-year relationship with Sandra Kalies, who also predeceased Terry. He was a lifelong career employee at Special Metals as an electrical technician. Terry was a dedicated member of the Special Metals’ Credit Union Board of Directors. Upon his retirement from Special Metals, he remained a board member. Terry up until his recent illness, he was an exceptional athlete who was going to the gym at least three times a week. His other athletic accolades included: running in the Boiler Maker, Golfing, and Bowling. Terry was also an avid hunter. He was a tech savvy person and when Excel Program was first introduced, he kept the stats and scheduled programs for his golfing league. Terry was also known to be, “the guy” to always lend a helping hand. He was always mowing neighborhood lawns, or shoveling sidewalks, for those who could not perform those tasks. He was a “pillar” to his family, always there to offer love, support, and wisdom. Those traits he passed on to his family and leaves as a legacy.
Terry is survived by his children, Kim Erwin and her husband Don, of Loganville, GA, and Terry Smith, and his wife, Carrie of Ocala, Fl; Sandra’s children: Cindy Lazzaro and her husband Tom, of Verona, Thomas Kalies also of Verona, Greg Giacovelli of Utica, and Jeffrey Kalies and his companion, Hannah Gage of New Hartford; his brother Norm Smith and his wife Janet of Lancaster, PA, and their daughter Nicole; and his brother-in-law, Frank Boyle of Asheville, NC, and his children Holly and Jeff. Terry is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He leaves behind his numerous friends from his golfing league, his bowling league, the gym, and the numerous neighbors who he was always there to lend a generous and helping hand.
He was predeceased by his parents Gilbert and Ethel; Norma and Sandra; and his sister Joyce Boyle.
Terry’s funeral will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 12:30 PM from the Paul Funeral Home of Madison with the Rev. Christopher Ballard, Pastor of the Spirt of Hope Catholic Community Officiating. There will be a visitation from 11:30 AM until the time of service at the funeral home, 3592 South Street in Madison. Interment will be in Madison Village Cemetery. Terry and his family are being provided with personal and professional care by Jeffrey T. Paul, Director of the Paul Funeral Home of Madison.
