Jefferson L. Mayne
Brookfield - Jefferson Lynn Mayne, 77, passed away peacefully with the love and support of his family at his side on Saturday, January 2, 2026, at the Wynn Hospital.
He was born on August 13, 1948, in New Berlin, the son of the late Lester and Frances Mayne. Jeff was raised in West Burlington and was a graduate of Edmeston Central School. When he first moved to Brookfield he became the dog warden so he was able to meet the people in the community. Jeff then worked as an automobile mechanic at his brother Hubie’s Texaco garage in Waterville. He went on to work for the Town of Brookfield Highway Department as Superintendent for 12 years. In 1972, at the Waterville united Methodist Church, Jeff married Wanda Eastman. He then owned and operated the Beaver Den Diner in Brookfield from 1989 to 1997. He rebought the diner in 2004 with the new owners, his son Carl and his daughter in law, Kate. The Beaver Den is a family run diner with the help of Jeff’s wife, Wanda who is always there working alongside her family. Jeff’s family also used the diner to sponsor many chicken barbecues to help local organizations.
Jeff was a dedicated community member who cared for, and gave so much of his wisdom, knowledge, and business expertise to many of Brookfield’s organizations. He had spent numerous years as a board member of the Town of Brookfield Town Council. He had also served as President and Vice-President of the Madison County Fair Board. Jeff was a dedicated member of the Brookfield Fire Department, always there to answer the call when someone was in need or danger. He was just posthumously awarded his 50 year certificate from the New York State Firefighters Association. Throughout his 50 years in the organization, Jeff had held numerous positions. He exemplified what a small town like Brookfield is all about: putting others before self, making the community a better place to live for all, and being kind and respectful of others. By treating them as you, yourself would expect to be treated. Jeff’s devotion to the community was certainly out matched for the way he loved and cared for Wanda, his children, and grandchildren. Even in Jeff’s passing, he leaves a shining legacy for others to continue on with his love, his wisdom, and his loyalty to family and community.
He is survived by his loved and cherished family: his wife, soulmate, and business partner of 53 years Wanda; his children and their spouses; Richard (Vicki) Mayne, Carl (Kate) Mayne, and Scott (Hannah) Mayne; his grandchildren Haley, Ashley, Jordan, Caden, Kaylie, Danny, and Eli; his great grandson Jameson; and his sister Evelyn Lewis. Jeff is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, his fire department family, and the Brookfield Community as a whole.
Jeff was predeceased by his daughter Paula Mayne and his siblings: Hubert Mayne, Robert Mayne, Bilea Mayne, Richard Mayne, Mary Edwards, Beatrice William, and Virginia Hungerford. Jeff was also predeceased by three brother-in-laws: Lloyd Williams, Lewis Hungerford, and James Lewis.
Jeff’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the EMS services and Utica Area Hospitals, their doctors, nurses, and support staff that provided compassionate care for Jeff over the last few years. Your kindness and dedication will always be remembered.
