Henry G. Uhlig
Henry G. Uhlig passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 14, 1937, in Oriskany Falls, NY, the son of the late Henry and Gertrude (Godfrey) Uhlig. He was raised in Bouckville, NY and graduated from Madison Central School. On August 3, 1957, in Madison, NY, Henry married Viola M. Kemp and they raised their family in Bouckville. He joined the National Guard in 1956, rising to the rank of sergeant prior to his discharge in 1962. He was a well-known businessman, and formed Uhlig Brothers in 1967 with his brother, Drew. After running a successful snowmobile business, they transitioned into residential construction. Together they renovated and built many homes within the area, and each project, no matter how large or small, benefited from their craftsmanship and attention to detail. In 1990 Henry opened the Depot Antique Gallery in Bouckville, retiring from the business in 2023. Henry’s highest achievement from his business endeavors were the relationships he built with others. He was known for his quick smile, love of listening to and telling stories, his morning ritual of coffee and a donut, and his iconic hat.
He loved animals and was an active member of the FFA in high school. He showed a calf that he raised, earning many showmanship ribbons, including grand champion. In the 1970’s he began a hobby of raising purebred Herefords, of which his favorite was Curly. He loved to travel, and visited many states with his wife, Viola. Henry’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He formed a special connection with each family member, recognizing and appreciating their individual qualities.
Henry is survived by his wife, Viola Uhlig, daughter Pamela Blocklin and husband Ronald of Syracuse, NY, son Henry (Bub) Uhlig and wife Mary of Castleton, NY, and daughter Susan Caraher and husband Eric of Morrisville, NY; grandchildren Michael Caraher, Colin Caraher, Ellen (Brandon) Parker, Laura (Shane) Hans, and Mark (Marisa) Uhlig, as well as his great-grandchildren, Patrick and Adelaide Hans. He is also survived by Drew Uhlig, his best friend and brother, and his wife Karen, of Hamilton, NY, along with many extended family members and friends. Henry was predeceased by his parents and his nephew, Jeffrey Uhlig.
The family would like to thank Julia, Michael, and Tammy for their love and compassion while assisting with Henry’s care, as well as to Hospice for their support during this difficult time.
