Harold L. Howlett Obituary

Harold L Howlett
Bouckville – Harold A. Howlett, 93, a lifelong resident of Pine Woods, passed away at the family homestead, on Friday, May 15, 2026, with his beloved wife Josie at his side

Harold was born in Oneida, on February 27, 1933, the son of the late Chester Howlett and Mildred Lilly Howlett. One of eight children, Harold grew up on the family farm where he was taught the values of family, hard work, and   dedication to the farm. Harold ran the family farm for many years, later transitioning into other various business ventures. He was an excellent carpenter and builder; and he had renovated many buildings that were used for his apartment rental business. He was an avid collector of just about anything that had to do with antiques. He was always hunting at garage sales and antique shows buying and selling. Harold’s specialty was anything that had to do with hunting or fishing. He would attend various antique shows; meticulously displaying his collection for sale: taxidermy oddities, bow and arrows, various animal head trophies, animal hides and furs, snow shoes, antique fishing and hunting items. Harold always also collected many different items of interest that he could sell. He would always look forward to selling his wears at the annual Bouckville Antique Show. Following the show, he was also known to have one of the largest yard sales in the area at his home, selling what didn’t get sold at the show.

Being brought up on the farm, Harold had a lot of hidden talents that he used throughout in life. He was an excellent carpenter, and built a carousel outside of his home for his children to enjoy. He also created a beautiful work of nature outside of his dining room window. He had built a beautiful pond for his Koi fish, along with a log cabin, and a trickling spring stream with a bridge, a gazebo, and other building additions to his and Josie’s home. The Pond bought them much enjoyment and fulfillment. Harold and Josephine were inseparable and married in Hamilton in 1976. They made many memorable journeys to Indian Lake, to Blue Mountain, garage sales, and going to Old Forge. Josie was at Harold’s side every step of his life, whether it was in the apartment business, the antique business, or any building project around the family home. In his younger days, Harold also enjoyed snowmobile, racing, racing his Arctic Cat Snowmobile professionally. Harold leaves behind a legacy of love and friendship to everyone he met along the highway of life. He was a people person, and because of his business nature always was fair and personable with everybody he dealt with; but most of all he had a great love and devotion for Josie and his family.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Josie; his children: Kathy Howlett of Fort Myers, FL. Peggy Whipple of Crossville, TN, Deborah Reichert of Eatonville, WA, Peter Howlett of Croghan, NY, Virginia Howlett of Canastota and John Howlett of North Carolina. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Yvonne Price of Fulton, Michelle Gage of Canastota and John Livermore of Cazenovia. Harold is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Chester and Lilly, and his beloved daughter Amanda Taylor. Harold was the last living member of his generation having lost his other seven siblings prior to his passing.
