Eugene "Clayton" Day Sr.Morrisville-Eugene C. Day, Sr.(Clayton),89, a twelve year resident of the Crouse Community Center, passed away peacefully on Monday December, 14, 2020.Eugene was born on July 25, 1931 in Montpelier, VT, the son of the late John and Ethel Widger Day. He was raised in the Smyrna-Earlville area graduating from Sherburne High School. Eugene started his working career on the family farm and local farms in the area. He later found his true passion. He became a carpenter's apprentice under his uncle, Eddie Johnson. He continued the business of Johnson and Day Contractors for many years. Eugene was a master craftsman in carpentry, masonry, roofing, electrical and general repairs. He was particularly known for his excellent masonry work. Much of his work was performed in Madison and Chenango County. He spent many years living in Earlville area. Later he spent time living in Smyrna serving on the Town Council, Building Codes Officer and Smyrna Town Justice. Eugene had been a School Bus Driver for the Sherburne-Earlville School District for 20 years. He will be deeply missed by all that he shared his heart with. He never lost his sense of humor and was always quick with a joke. He is survived by his children: Patricia (Mark) Alger, Nancy (Mike) Day Hargraves Brotzman, David Day, Eugene C. (Kelly) Day Jr. and Doris Day Excell; his grandchildren Jessica (Nathan) Hammond, Mitchell (Megan) Alger, Katherine (Chauncey) Watches, Daniel Hargraves, Dustin Hargraves, Onisty Brotzman, Olaney Brotzman, Tyler Day, Caci Day, Angelica Last and Austin Excell; his brothers and sisters: Carl (Joyce) Day, Pauline Hopson, Joseph (Geraldine) Day, George (Sandy) Day, Dorothy Harper and Kathy Schlernitzauer; Patsy Williams (his second wife), 13 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Eugene was predeceased by his parents John and Ethel, very special aunt Laura Johnson, his sister and brother-in-law Ethel and Howard Hoke; Brother and sister-in-law John and Roseanna Day; Brothers in law John Hopson and Eugene Harper; Daryl Day, Mary E. Day (his first wife) and long time companion Margaret Dixon.His family offers a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Crouse Community Center for the compassionate care given to Eugene. Graveside services will be held in spring for Eugene at Sherburne West Hill Cemetery. In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Earlville, the local SPCA or an organization of your choice. Eugene's care was entrusted to the Paul Funeral Home of Madison.
