Donald L. ‘Toots” Winn
Oriskany Falls-Donald LeRoy “Toots” Winn, 80, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023, following a courageous fight against cancer, at Community Memorial Hospital, with the love and support of his family at his side.
He was born in Sangerfield, on September 26, 1942, the son of the Arthur and Ella Karlman Winn. Toots had attended Madison High School. At a young age he had a fascination of heavy excavating equipment. He furthered his education by apprenticing under experienced operators and on the job experience. His work experience included T.J Madden Construction, Fred Burrows Construction, Lancaster Construction, Eastern Rock, and most recently Pat Kitchen Excavating. Toots could work a piece of equipment moving earth, as an artist would paint a portrait. His love was not only in earth moving equipment. He was just as at home on farm equipment, helping local farmers do tiling and field work. Toots had served his community as the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Augusta for ten years and a board member of the Town of Augusta Town Board. He had also served as a fireman for both the Oriskany Falls Fire Department and the Madison Fire Department. He was a member of the Cassety Hollow Rod and Gun Club in Oriskany Falls. On September 1, 1973, at St. Joseph’s Church in Oriskany Falls, Toots married Lois Kennett. Toots played as hard as he worked. He enjoyed hunting, tractor pulls, NASCAR, and socializing at Fred’s Barber Shop. Most of all, he loved any precious moment that he spent with his only grandchild, Carly Winn.
Toots leaves behind his cherished son and daughter- in- law Casey and Heather Winn of Madison; his loving and only granddaughter Carly Winn; his former wife Lois Winn of Knoxboro; his aunt Sylvia Person (99) of St. Luke’s Rehab Center, Utica, NY, his nephews that he thought a lot of, and many cherished friends and neighbors.
He was predeceased by his parents Art and Ella; his brother and sister-in-law Larry “Haas” and Aggie Winn; and a niece Linda Winn.
