Darrell J. Legacy

Oriskany Falls-Darrell Legacy, 88, a life area resident, passed away peacefully, in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the Waterville Residential Care Center.

He was born on January 25, 1936, at home in Oriskany Falls.  He was raised in Oriskany Falls under the loving care of his mother, Loretta Legacy.  Darrell was a graduate of Oriskany Falls High School. On September 8, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oriskany Falls, he was united in marriage to Caroline Barth. Darrell had a lifelong career working for Eastern Rock, and eventually retiring from Hanson after forty years of service. Darrell had a strong work ethic and spent 28 years on the road crew building numerous highways throughout the state.  His last 12 years he spent working in the quarry.  He was also an excellent mechanic.  Over his lifetime, Darrell had restored and customized numerous classic cars and pickups. He was a “Ford” man, with his favorite ride being his 1937 Ford “Rat Rod” pickup. Darrell and Caroline had built their home from the ground up on the hill to raise their beloved family of two sons and two daughters.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved both hunting and trapping and was a long-time member of the Cassidy Hollow Rod and Gun Club.  He was also a member of the Utica Car Club. Darrell loved any moment that he could spend with family, especially his grandchildren.  He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, hard work, and compassion, that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.  

Darrell is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Caroline; his children: Roberta Gaynor, and her husband James of Collegeville, PA, Scott Legacy, and his wife Kyle of Waterville, and Rebecca Legacy also of Waterville; his cherished grandchildren: Jessica, Jill, Kristin, Kolbey, and Alison.  He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother Loretta, his brother Fred, his sister Eleanor, his beloved son Steven, and a cherished grandson Jeremiah Johnson.

Darrell’s family will gather privately for a graveside service to held in Hillside Cemetery with the Reverend Jennifer Neidhart officiating.  There will be no public calling hours.  Compassionate and personal care is being provided to Darrell and his family by Jeffrey T.
