Bert L. Snyder Obituary
Madison-Bert L. Snyder, 92, of Augusta Road passed away on the evening of March 31, in the comfort of the home he constructed with the love and blessing of his entire family and his wife Barbara at his side until the end.Bert was born in Hamilton, NY on January 13, 1929 and spent his early years learning about life from his Dad after his Mom passed when Bert was 6. Bert graduated from Madison Central School where he was a standout athlete and where he met his soulmate of 70+ years Barbara Biedermann. Bert and Barb were married on March 11th, 1951 the day before he was sent to serve his country with the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He was deployed with the 45th Infantry Division as a medic and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Upon his return Bert joined the NYS Conservation Department as an Environmental Conservation Officer and was proud to be one of the last true "Game Wardens". Bert retired in 1987 after 34 years of dedicated service and earned numerous awards thru the years to include being named to the Outdoorsman Hall Of Fame. Bert told all of us that his less than law-abiding ways as a youth provided him with a sixth sense on what the game law violators he chased would be doing. Bert served on Madison Centrals Board of Education, represented the Town of Madison as Supervisor and was involved in many other organizations to give back to the community he loved.Bert enjoyed a wide variety of pastimes and grabbed a slice of so many opportunities that life offered. He was a skilled woodworker creating many pieces that his family enjoys today. He was a successful hunter loving the sound of a hound in hot pursuit, expert fisherman and superb trapper passing his skills on to his sons and grandsons. He was a prolific writer who created volumes of poems with many finding their way in to print. Bert loved the sport of harness racing and found a true passion for raising his "babies" from his broodmares as part of the "Rain Stable". Bert's top two performers, Evening Rain and Mystee Rain, provided many thrills for the entire family in the 70's and 80's. He loved listening to classic country music and looked forward to the family weekend "pickin' and grinnin'" session sing-a-longs. As Bert aged to where he could not cover the ground like he once did he remained actively involved by taking great photos of the "kids" sporting events as well as providing keepsakes of everyone's hunting successes. Without a doubt Bert's greatest and enduring legacy will be as the patriarch of his family. No one was more proud of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids accomplishments and achievements. He and Barb rarely missed a game, a concert or event where one of their brood was participating and he loved the long-standing tradition of "Sunday Dinners" that helped form and cement the Snyder families' bond. Bert is survived by his forever loving wife Barbara, "the 3-K's": his son Kevin (Michelle), daughter Kristin (Myron) and son Kris (Cindy) as well as 7 grandchildren and their spouses/significant others and 11 great-grandchildren. Bert also leaves his special sister-in-law Jo Blunt, his nephew Patrick and niece Kim. He was predeceased by his sister Ida, his brother-in-law Fred Blunt, nephew Terry Blunt and his great-granddaughter Kaylyn as well as so many trusted friends and former mentors too numerous to list.At Bert's request there will be no calling hours and private services are entrusted to the Paul Funeral Home with a family and friends celebration of life to be held for Bert after his cremation that includes touching tributes and special memorabilia from his entire family. To remember Bert and in lieu of flowers the family is establishing a scholarship at Madison Central School to be awarded to a deserving, graduating senior planning a career in conservation or environmental studies. Contributions can be sent to: Ms. Jo Blunt, Augusta Road, Madison, NY 13402 made out to the Bert L. Snyder Scholarship Fund.
